Day 18 - Thief on the Cross
Read: Luke 23:39-43
Reflect: In this passage, we see the story of the "thief" on the cross who, unlike the other criminal, repented and put his faith in Jesus. It is possible, though not confirmed, that this "thief" was actually a Zealot, a political group that sought to overthrow Roman rule. This perspective gives a new meaning to his words, when he said to Jesus "Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom." He could have been acknowledging that Jesus was not a political messiah but a spiritual one, and he wanted to be remembered in the eternal kingdom, not just an earthly one.
This story teaches us about the power of repentance and faith, even in the face of death. It reminds us that it's never too late to turn to God, regardless of our past or the circumstances. It also teaches us about the true nature of Jesus's mission, that he came to save not just a certain group of people or a nation, but all of humanity and offer them eternal life.
Respond: Take a moment to reflect on any areas of your life where you may be holding on to past mistakes or regrets. Challenge yourself to turn to God, as the "thief" did, and put your faith in Jesus. Remember that Jesus's mission is to save all of humanity and offer them eternal life, and be encouraged to follow him.
