Day 2 - Mary
Read: Luke 1:26-38
Reflect: In this scripture we see how Mary was obedient to God through her faith in Him. The angel Gabriel came to Mary with news that seemed impossible: Mary had found favor in God’s eyes, would conceive a son, and this son would be the Savior of the world. In the society that Mary lived in, being pregnant and unmarried would result in shame and ridicule. It would have been completely normal for both her fiancé and father to leave and disown her.
Look closely at how Mary responds to this life-altering news. Instead of asking “Why me, God?”, Mary simply asks “How shall this be…?” Gabriel responds by explaining how the Holy Ghost would come upon her and this child would be the Son of God, but Gabriel doesn’t stop there. Gabriel continues with more news that might seem impossible to us, but was made possible with God: Mary’s cousin Elisabeth (who had been considered barren) was now pregnant with a child in her old age.
Mary was assured that God was moving in her situation when she heard of how He had already moved in Elisabeth’s life. By verse 38, Mary had come to the conclusion that God was in the process, so the process could be trusted. She then wholeheartedly submitted herself to God and His plan for her life.
Respond: Impossible situations, such as the one Mary found herself in, test our faith; sometimes they lead to doubt, fear, and panic. When those emotions set in, it is important to focus on who God is and what He has done, not the seemingly impossible situation we have found ourselves in. Faith leads to obedience and submission, just as Mary shows us. What are some ways that you can be obedient to God? Think back on the situations you have faced before, do you find yourself submitting to God or struggling to trust Him?
