Day 14 - Matthew & Simon

John Jolly

Read: Matthew 9:9-13; Luke 6:15;  Acts 1:13

Reflect: In this passage, we see the story of Matthew, a tax collector, and Simon, a Zealot. They were two very different individuals, with Matthew being a collaborator with the Roman occupiers, and Simon being a nationalist who opposed Roman rule. Their backgrounds could have made them enemies, but Jesus saw something in them and called them to be his disciples. This passage teaches us about the power of God to bring together people from different backgrounds and make them united in their faith.

Matthew and Simon's story is an example of how God can use our past and our differences to bring about his purpose. It reminds us that regardless of our background, God sees us all as equals and calls us to follow him. It also teaches us about the importance of unity and love, that we should not let our differences divide us but rather bring us together.

Matthew and Simon, both met their ends as martyrs, Matthew by sword and Simon by crucifixion. Their deaths are a reminder that following Jesus may lead to persecution and suffering, but it also brings eternal life.

Respond: Take a moment to reflect on any areas of your life where you may be divided from others because of your background or differences. Challenge yourself to overcome these barriers and to seek unity and love in your relationships, like Matthew and Simon did. Remember their example of following Jesus, despite their different backgrounds and the cost of their faith, and be encouraged to do the same in your own life.
